Resceach Blog

Can Pit Bulls become service dogs? No they can not . Some believe that the breed pit bulls are naturally vicious and can hurt people in the public surrounds. They believe if the Pit Bulls goes in public it will attack the people surrounding them but that is not true pit bulls for hundreds of years has been bred to have a human friendly disposition and a sense of owner loyalty. Unfortunately because of the way society ignorance toward pit bulls they have went from being highly respected to now a vicious breed. Some people still use Pit Bulls for many service things as in drug detection, emergency rescue, service and therapy work, military work and more.I feel as though Pit Bulls should  be allowed to become service dogs because they are not born vicious the owners make them that way. With the right training any dog can do anything just like humans. I understand fearing for people's lives but what if the dog was certified to become a service dog would you let the dog into public places? All dogs aren't mean joust like people aren't mean but just like people they get hurt and become that way. If a woman/man walked into a place with an attitude yelling at people would you to give them service as well. Why is it that they can't help others either ? Police men train their dogs to become vicious to others isn't that bad as well shouldn't that breed be banded too? Why can't they just let Pit Bulls be used for certain service needs. All people who get bit by a Pit Bill is not always the victim.  This would be good in my documentary to talk about what restrictions are on dogs becoming service dogs and why are their restrictions on the breed of the dog. Reflection Blog

Wow as I write my last blog of the semester I realize that I have improved on my research skills and my writing skills. I feel like since I have been writing blogs it makes me express the way I feel by writing/typing it down in a better way. I have noticed that when you are analyzing articles you need to provide  where the article can be found so other can read it and analyze it themselves. What worked really well for me throughout the process was the fact that i had a topic to write about and I had to focus on certain blogs to write about. Sometimes it did have its down falls because trying to find different articles about one topic sometimes can be hard but it also helped me to learn how to search everywhere not just one place. You have to go out and find difference thinks to acknowledge yourself and that I did I learned more about my topic just from looking in other places for my research.  I ran into writer's block because I didn't want to keep repeating myself in each blog I wanted to keep it different and interesting but I caught myself repeating some of the same things in my old blogs to my new blogs. I can honestly say that making blogs every week has helped me a lot it expanded my knowledge on researching and on different strategies on how to write. I think i will create my own blog for personal things just to have somewhere to let all my emotions out.

Survey Blog

My documentary is on 4 Paws for Ability and as a group many of us are doing different things. Two of the members of the group decided to do  interviews while the rest of us three decided to do surveys. I decided to do a survey which includes a minimum  of fifty people. My survey questions consist of three questions. Question number one is are you female or male? Question number two is do you think college student are capable of training a dog to become a service dog? Question number three was do you think Pit bulls are able to be service dogs? Well so far I have gotten thirty four people to complete my survey. I asked them also if they could tell why or why not. I picked these questions because I wanted to get a view from the people if they think college kids can handle training a dog on their own. I also chose to ask what the people think about pitbulls becoming service dogs because they are restricted on becoming one. The result of my survey so far is that I have received twenty seven  females and seven males so far to complete the survey. My next question I received sixteen yes that college student can train dogs to become service dogs, six answered no and  eleven said maybe.  Those who said yes believe that people can do anything if they put their mine to it and if they really want to do it they can with the proper training. Those who said no believe that college student have a lot on there plate already with focusing on school. Those who said maybe believe that it depends on if the person can handle the responsibilities of taking care of a dog and training the dog to become a service dog. For my last question surprisingly twenty four people said yes to letting pit bulls become  service dogs and 10 said no. Those who said yes believe that you can train any dog to become a service dog with the right training but those who said no claim that the dogs are too vicious. I will continue one with my survey so I can find the people's answer because I question why pit bulls are restricted  when there are a lot out there that are not vicious.

I found this article titled Access Rights and Access Wrongs: Ethical Issues and Ethical Solutions for Service Dog Use by Deni Elliott and Pamela S. Hogle. People with a variety of disabilities benefit from the ADA for easy public access with their service dogs. The problem is that people with non-disabilitiy are passing off their pets as service dog. Some people are threatened by the dogs that come in public places. When people bring in their dogs that aren't service dogs in public places they are putting the people who really can in a bad position. They put them in a bad position because if something was to happen like a dog bite a child and they thought it was a service dog that will give the service dogs a bad look on going into public places with children. Some places require for you to have a certificate ready to be shown which i think is good but a little bit to much because why should you bring out a paper to show maybe they should just look at the dogs collar and can tell by that .This will be good to go in the documentary because it shows what are some of the bad things that are stoping service dogs. I don't understand why people would think it is okay to put others in danger? I think others believe that they know that he managers won ask if t is a service dog because they think it might be rude but with problems like this they all should be checked.

I found a book called Nuzzle:Love Between a Boy and His Service Dog by James Rebecca. This book is showing how the service dog can really make a change on a child's life and because the child's best friend. This boo is based on a true story about a Golden Retriever named Chancer who was  the first certified service dog to be used with a boy diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and is a brain injury behaviors . this book was mostly narrated by Donnie Kanter Winokur his son had the disorder. Chancer always knew he was suppose to be a boys best friend but he had to go through some rough times before he can meet his best friend. Chancer was a dog who was isolated by a couple who chained him outside. after his first birthday he was rescued by 4 Paws for Ability. They gave him special training and made  him into service dog which then he became Iyal Winokur's companion. This will be good for our documentary because we are working on the organization 4 Paws for Ability and this is a true story how the rescued a dog and gave him a safe home to stay. This story is heart warming because the dog really connected with the boy and the boy really connected with the dog. They help each other out in many ways for one example companionship. Their family also was happy to see their son happy and has someone else to help them out.

I found an article called Service Dogs and the Rights of the Disabled by William D. Goren
This article is discusses the use of service dogs by people with disabilities. Their are certain breeds of dogs protected while the use of other breeds are not. Service dogs by law are allowed to go with you into public places. their definition of service dogs are any dog individually trained to do work or preform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory psychiatric intellectual or other mental disability. If a service dog enter a public place the personnel at the public place can make the decision on whether to call or not and see if the dogs is accepted because even though the dog is there for service it is also their for emotional support. if the person with disability misrepresents the dog as a service animal when it is not that federal crime. Some issue related to service dogs is the legality of breed restrictions. some ordinances restrict which breeds of dog can reside in a town and which can not. The breed restriction is often pit bulls. This would be great in our documentary because it gives us more federal information and what is allowed world wide not just in our organizations. If you train your dog to become a service dog because you can't afford a service dog why can't it be a service dog also?Service dogs are expensive and some people with a lot of medical problems bills can't afford it so they have to what they have to do...http://eds.a.ebscohost.com/ehost/detail/detail?vid=4&sid=d615dd00-bea1-451e-a8fb-6e8e66bba306%40sessionmgr4004&hid=4208&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZSZzY29wZT1zaXRl#db=a9h&AN=95611342
